If it involves food, I’m there.
From dunking chips into various concoctions to slapping gravy on just about anything and everything, my friends have some ~interesting~ culinary faves. I asked a handful of my besties for some of their slightly unusual foodie habits, and gave them a go! Here’s what I thought…
First up, I went in with something that sounded like if it went well, it could be something I’d actually like – a peanut butter, Marmite, and cucumber sandwich.

Is it delish? Here’s the thing. This is even better than I expected, and I did have high hopes. When you get over the initial surprise that these foods have been put together you realise it actually makes perfect sense – the sticky saltiness of the spreads balanced out by the refreshing crunch of the cucumber – unreal!
Overall rating: 😋😋😋😋😋
Would I try this again? BRB, just making another one.
Next, I decided to try a popular yet divisive combo – McDonald’s fries dipped in milkshake. I mean separately these two are stunning, so I had high hopes.

Is it delish? I went for the banana milkshake, and I have to say the combo definitely worked. The milkshake is super creamy though, so you only need a little on your fries.
Overall rating: 😋😋😋
Would I dip my chips again? Maybe if I was in the right mood, but I think I’d probably sip and munch separately on this occasion.
Another fave was smoked salmon with salt and vinegar crisps. This one came from a foodie friend so while this was certainly one of the more ‘out there’ combos, I was up for giving it a try!
Jess Brunt / BuzzFeed
Is it delish? It actually kind of is. Initially the combo shocked me, but somehow the crispy-ness of the crisp (can you tell I’m no professional food critic?!) works well with the softness of the salmon. The strong flavour of the crisps also wasn’t too jarring with the salmon on top.
Overall rating: 😋😋😋
Is this a winner? I’d eat it again if it was there as I like both things separately and it did taste good, but I’m not sure I’d purposely buy them to put together in the future.
Next up, something I was a bit unsure of – enter tinned hot dogs and noodles. My main concern with this wasn’t that the combo would be bad necessarily, just that I’m not a big fan of the hot dogs in the first place.

Is it delish? If you like these two things separately, I can see why the combo would work. However, I’m not a massive fan of the hot dogs so for me it was a little ‘meh.’ If you like this kinda thing though, it could probably become a comfort food fave.
Overall rating: 😋😋
Is this a goer? Erm, not for me thanks.
A popular suggestion seemed to be bacon with sweet toppings. One friend said marmalade and, although I like both ingredients separately, I wasn’t convinced.

Is it delish? Now this one surprised me. It didn’t sound like a combo I could get on board with as I’d usually keep a bacon sarnie savoury with a dollop of ketchup or brown sauce. But, I will say that the bacon made the marmalade taste less tangy, and the spread gave the bacon a slight sweetness.
Overall rating: 😋😋😋😋
Would I go in for round two with the marmalade bacon? Probably, if I was in a fancy kinda mood.
After asking around, I was told that bacon can also be great with white chocolate, so I decided to try that too.
Jess Brunt / BuzzFeed
Is it delish? Erm yes it is actually. It had a similar sweet hit to the marmalade, so I think we can basically conclude that sticky sweet spreads taste pretty decent with bacon. Not sure I’d try it again on a hangover, mind.
Overall rating: 😋😋😋😋
What’s the final verdict on the white choc and bacon combo? I think I slightly preferred this to the marmalade, but I’m still not sure I’m 100% a sweet sarnie convert.
Keeping on the sweet and savoury theme, the combo of grapefruit and salt came up as a fave of one of my teammates. I actually used to dislike grapefruit, but honestly this was so good!
Jess Brunt / BuzzFeed
Is it delish? Absolutely. If you like fruit for breakfast IMO it’s a must-try.
Overall rating: 😋😋😋😋😋
Would I try this again? Yep for sure – I reckon it’d make a pretty refreshing summer breakfast option!
Now, I love avocado and I adore a good spag bol so the next one intrigued me. I couldn’t imagine how the warm bolognese sauce would go with the avo. I only had pasta available, but I combined the sauce with the ‘IT’ breakfast fave to put it to the taste test.
Jess Brunt / BuzzFeed
Is it delish? Okay, so this wasn’t actually bad tasting, they just weren’t great together IMO. Perhaps my bolognese to avocado ratio was off, so I’m willing to listen and learn on this one.
Overall rating: 😋😋
Would I have it again? I love both of these foods separately (they’re actually two of my faves) but I’m afraid it’s a thumbs down from me for this combo! 😩
The next one probably makes perfect sense in all honesty, but one of my BFFs is obsessed with KFC gravy. She’s even been known to drink it on its own as an afternoon snack. Anyway, she likes dipping crisps into it, so I thought I’d give it a shot.
Jess Brunt / BuzzFeed
Is it delish? I went for ready salted crisps and I can confirm that yes it was as good as you might hope. It was similar to gravy and chips, but with added crunch which I prefer as I like my fries crispy anyway.
Overall rating: 😋😋😋😋
Overall, I probably would do this again, but as much as it tasted good, I can’t say I’d queue up at the drive-thru just for the gravy, soz!
Next, I asked a colleague for more unusual food inspo, and it was suggested that the combo of apple and prawn cocktail crisps was elite, so off to the shop I went.
Jess Brunt / BuzzFeed
Is it delish? Yes for sure. Even though it’s not something I ever would have thought to have put together, I had an inkling that this would work. I went for a red apple and the tangy-ness of the crisps went well with the sweetness of the fruit.
Overall rating: 😋😋😋😋😋
Finally, I’m pleased to say that this is a combo I’d have again for sure. Also, adding the fruit means I feel like it kinda counts as a half nutritious snack!
