From 2011 to 2017, the beloved MTV series “Teen Wolf” brought new life to the original 1985 film of the same name. The show followed teenage protagonist Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), a high school student who learns to balance his dual identity as a werewolf and protect his town from supernatural creatures. During its six-year run, “Teen Wolf” garnered a loyal fan base, and since its end, fans of the show have been eagerly anticipating a similar teen drama to sink their teeth into.
In December 2021, Deadline broke the news that “Teen Wolf” creator Jeff Davis would be returning to the werewolf universe with a new series, “Wolf Pack.” Upon the release of the announcement, many immediately tied the upcoming series to “Teen Wolf” and assumed it would be a spinoff. The thought isn’t far-fetched to believe, as Davis revisited the “Teen Wolf” franchise in 2022 when he wrote the script for “Teen Wolf: The Movie,” but “Wolf Pack” actually has no connection to the original series and isn’t a spinoff. According to Entertainment Weekly, Davis clarified the show’s differences during an interview at New York Comic Con.
For one, “Wolf Pack” is inspired by the book series of the same name by Edo van Belkom. Additionally, Davis explained that he wanted to explore traditional myths in the series rather than do a creative spin on them like in “Teen Wolf.” “I did want to do something different, but from Teen Wolf. With ‘Teen Wolf,’ one of the first things we did was here’s the traditional werewolf myth, how do we spin it. This, I wanted to go back to more traditional myths,” he said.
The storyline and characters of “Wolf Pack” have more depth as well, according to Davis. “I found with teenagers these days, there are issues such as anxiety, disconnected youth trying to find each other, can they still find each other in a world like this where it’s all technology, pandemics, and people are being separated,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “That’s really what the story is about: these four kids finding each other, and finding their pack, and finding their people.”
“Wolf Pack” centers around four teenagers whose lives are changed when a raging wildfire awakens a supernatural creature in their California town. Through the disastrous chaos, the group fight to survive and ultimately discover that when a full moon appears, they all share a secret connection to a werewolf.
