Brie Larson has a lot riding on her shoulders when she takes to the skies in the upcoming film ‘The Marvels‘. Besides carrying the weight of the franchise, this time, she will also be carrying the load of the huge film budget that reportedly shot way past the $140 million mark.
In a recent Forbes article, Disney confirmed that ‘The Marvels’, is now the most expensive movie in Marvel’s Phase 5 lineup. This announcement comes as a significant financial revelation, surpassing the budgets of other notable productions in theMarvel Cinematic Universe.
‘The Marvels’ exceeded budget expectations which started out as a $140 million movie. According to the report, the studio shelled out a staggering $270 million in the film’s production, notably surpassing the budgets of other Phase 5 projects, such as ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ which was made in $200 million, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ made in $250 million USD, and even the Disney+ series ‘Secret Invasion’ which had a budget of $212 million.According to the reports, one major factor contributing to the budget is the $55 million subsidy provided by the U.K. government for the production of ‘The Marvels’. However, the film’s budget still totals an impressive $219.8 million.
For ‘The Marvels’ to break even, the studio would need to gross a minimum of $439.6 million, which could pose as a challenge with other MCU films including ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ facing hurdles at the box office.
‘The Marvels’ is the sequel to ‘Captain Marvel‘, and picks up where Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers left off, following the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame‘. The film is set to feature ‘WandaVision’ actress Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and ‘Ms. Marvel’ star Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan. ,
Directed by Nia DaCosta, the film shares a connection with the Ms. Marvel TV show and serves as a link to future MCU films. Breaking multiple barriers in the American film industry, DaCosta also became the first and youngest African-American women to helm one of the Marvel films. In a statement, she said, “When I go into those rooms, I’m really just like, ‘This is what I want.'”

“I’m not trying to figure out what they want, so I don’t have those kinds of nerves.”
Her friend Thompson, who knows her way around the Marvel universe, having played Valkyrie in the Thor films, praised the director and said, “She has this combination of real humility and also this idea of ‘Why shouldn’t I be able to do these things?’ That belief in self—you need that, especially if you’re in a position where people are inclined to underestimate you.”
The Marvels also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon in pivotal roles. The upcoming film follows Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau on a cosmic quest to save the world, while their powers inexplicably get intertwined with each other! Will they be able to untangle the power mixup in time to banish the quest?
The film hits Indian theatres this Diwali on November 10 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. It will clash at the box office with Salman Khan’s ‘Tiger 3’ that is also one of the biggest releases in Indian cinemas as it will see the superstar reunite onscreen with Shah Rukh Khan in the next instalment of the YRF spy universe franchise.
