House Republicans probe leaked NSA glossary that featured ‘white fragility,’ ‘genderqueer’

House Republicans are investigating a leaked glossary of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) terms passed around the National Security Agency, which they say provides a “deeply troubling” look into the “hiring and contracting processes” of the intelligence organization.

Reps. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) and Jim Banks (R-Ind.) wrote in a Tuesday letter to NSA Director Paul Nakasone that the glossary includes “incoherent” definitions of terms concerning gender, race and capitalism that could “harm national security.”

The lawmakers are asking for information about who disseminated the glossary, whether that employee has been disciplined and when it was removed from circulation.

“We understand NSA believes that an employee posted this glossary to an internal server without  authorization and was taken down once it was discovered,” they wrote.

“As a whole, it prompts these and other questions that as members of the House Armed Services Committee and Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence we need answered in order to conduct oversight and ensure NSA is focused on countering threats to US interests.”

The glossary includes well-known social justice terms like “white fragility” and “settler colonialism,” as well as endorsements of critical race theory as promoted by authors Robin DiAngelo and Ibram X. Kendi, according to a copy first published and reported on by The Daily Wire last week.

The Post has since obtained a copy of the glossary, which also uses the words “AFAB/AMAB: Assigned Female At Birth, Assigned Male At Birth,” “genderqueer” and “dragqueen/king.”

The NSA has declined to comment on the unclassified 34-page document, which was posted May 6, 2022.

“​​[T]his pamphlet attempts to describe ‘Whiteness,’ as ‘A broad societal construction that embraces the white culture, history, ideology, racialization, expressions, experiences,  epistemology, emotions, and behaviors,” the lawmakers said.

“NSA is an intelligence organization attempting to learn facts and provide analysis for decision-making. What epistemology, specifically, does NSA consider ‘white?’” they asked. “Do your employees agree? How has this changed their work?”

The GOP lawmakers also asked whether the definition of “capitalism” as “an economic and political order that relies on a mostly-private, unequal market system of production and consumption” reflected the official view of the agency.

“Since the United States waged the Cold War to sustain free capitalist societies, when did NSA officially adopt this view?” they queried.

The pair also probed whether the definitions of “structural racism” and “equity” — the latter of which has been embraced by President Biden and his administration — meant that “differential treatment based on race” is “practiced in NSA.”

Waltz and Banks further asked about the definition of “neocolonialism” as the domination of “former colonies in Asia, Africa, and the Americas” through “political, economic, social, military, or technical forces, generally disguised as humanitarian help or aid.”

“Some of these definitions seem to merge over into concepts that can harm national security,” they said of the term. “Is this official US policy towards nations in the developing world? If so, which ones?”

They also queried the intelligence agency about whether the mark on the file, “P65,” signifies it was internally cataloged and approved.

Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz called out the NSA on his podcast for pushing “a load of bigoted, insane nonsense” with the glossary — and potentially threatening US citizens’ private communication channels.

“Imagine the NSA intercepting your text messages and flagging … any material deemed to support ‘extremist’ beliefs, like ‘there are only two genders,’ or ‘I’m not sorry that my ancestors created Western civilization.’ Perhaps they’re already doing this,” Gaetz said last Thursday on an episdoe of “Firebrand.”

“What else would they be keeping a glossary like this for?” he asked.

Reps for NSA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
