Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl Trailer Talk – Janhvi Kapoor Soars Above Sexism In Netflix Film

It isn’t a stretch to think about how, when Gunjan Saxena, India’s first woman Air Force officer, joined the male-dominated field, sexist attitudes must have been rife. The trailer doesn’t ask us to imagine this, rather, it spells it out in great detail over 2 minutes and 42 seconds.

“Hamari zimmedari hai is desh ki raksha karna, humein barabari ka mauka dena nahi,” says one man at the beginning of the trailer. Gunjan (Janhvi Kapoor) grows up being told that women can’t be pilots, all while watching her brother join the Army. When she joins the Udhampur Air Force base, she finds that there’s not a single ladies toilet (“yeh jagah ladies ke liye bani hi nahi,” she’s told), an officer yells at her to change on the tarmac and another (Viineet Kumar Singh) arm wrestles her to prove she’s weak. Only her father (Pankaj Tripathi) is steadfastly supportive, speaking in encouraging metaphors.
